Summary of the Project
The Bangladesh Firestarter Initiative (BFI) Project is a reactive and open small grants scheme funded by the Queens Young Leaders Programme and implemented by ActionAid Bangladesh. It targets emerging and innovative youth-led organisations/clubs leading advocacy projects, especially those led by disadvantaged young people, especially young women, girls and minority communities outside of Dhaka. The project will build the capacity of youth driven organisations/clubs, provide peer to peer learning and sharing opportunities, mentorship and coaching. The project will also establish linkages with the wider youth sector and potential donors in the development of more sustainable and impaction social action strategies. The project will annually disburse funds through an open, transparent and competitive process in selected divisions over four years.
ActionAid Bangladesh (AAB) has been working for over 30 years in partnership with local organisations and networks in some of the poorest and most marginalised communities across the country. The organisation’s strategy paper prioritises its engagement with adolescents and youth across all programme, campaigns and policy work. AAB is also a member of the wider ActionAid Federation consisting of 45 countries and provides strategic contributor to shaping the youth engagement.
The Project Manager (PM) will be responsible for the overall implementation and management of the project. The Associate Officer will primarily be responsible for supporting partner organisations in the implementation of project activities. S/he will also be responsible for ensuring partner organisations adhere to project reporting standards and other compliance requirements as well as document best practices and/or lessons learnt. The incumbent will, as required, work across AAB’s strategic priorities and ensure that data is fed into donor reports, knowledge products, websites and social media so that results of the project are well communicated.
The position will be based in project locations (i.e. in the divisional cities covering targeted project partners). Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager (PM), the Associate Officer will undertake the following responsibilities and tasks but keeping in mind s/he should be flexible and able to adapt to the changing context and perform tasks as necessary related to the project.
Key responsibilities include (not limited to)
Project Implementation
  •  Support Project Manager to organize and operationalise capacity development and workshop initiatives intended for project partners;
  • Support partner organisations to implement project activities as outlined in their specific grant applications;
  • Support partner organisations to use relevant data collection tools and store data accurately and securely;
  • Support partner organisations to use narrative and financial reporting formats, maintenance of processes in line with specific project agreements;
  • Facilitate the establishment of linkages between partner organisations and/or other relevant stakeholders in the community e.g. local government authorities, I/NGOs, local businesses, media, civil societies etc.; and
  • Assist in organising local and national sharing meetings.
Reporting and Documentation
  • Regularly update project activities and financial information to the Project Officers for  Monitoring and Reporting, and Finance;
  • Support partner organisations to prepare monthly/six-monthly progress reports;
  • Undertake regular field visits for the purposes of data collection, stories of change and lessons learnt based on the activities of partners;
  • Support the development of knowledge products and documentary on youth innovation together with the project staff and other stakeholders; and
  • Support documentation of lessons learnt and key changes for the project.
Link to the wider Activista Network of Bangladesh
  • Support expansion of the Activista Bangladesh National Network in project locations;
  • Inspire and facilitate regular interactions and joint initiatives by project partners and youth groups of programme partners when applicable; and
  • Any other related tasks.
Relationships
S/he will report Project Manager – Bangladesh Firestarter Initiative (BFI) Project
Required Educational Qualification and Experience
  • A university degree, preferably a graduate degree in relevant subject areas (i.e. social sciences, development studies, economics or a related disciple).
  • At least 2 years or more of experience in promoting youth leadership, participation, advocacy and lobbying and project action implementation;
  • Past experience in supporting project implementation in the field and civic engagement with organisations will be viewed favourably;
  • Hands on experience in  the youth sector, advocacy, capacity development, small grants management or related fields;
Required Competencies
  • Demonstrated competence skills in report writing, documentation and record keeping;
  • Proficiency in communicating in both Bangla and English including written skills;
  •  Team player with strong experience in multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environments;
  • Past experience in project management, finance, monitoring and evaluation is an advantage;
  • Ability to work under extreme pressure, meet deadlines and travel in the field over extended periods of time;  and
  • Excellent knowledge and use of MS Office (i.e. Excel, Access) internet, social media and software packages.
